Answering a Reader's Question About eHow

Jill A. asked the following question:
I just signed up today to write for them but I couldn't figure out what they base the pay on? Does a certain number of points equal dollars?
Jill, you're right, it can be confusing to figure out how you'll make money with eHow. There is a formula, but writers aren't privy to exactly what it is. I can tell you, however, that the bulk of your earnings will come from advertising revenue and the bulk of advertising revenue will be from the Google Adsense ads that run on the eHow site. I don't believe that the eHow points systems has much, if anything, to do with earnings.

What does that mean to you as a writer? Well, if you have any knowledge of search engine optimization, use it! All other things being equal, if you write about topics whose readers are likely to click ads, you'll do well. Also, the more advertisers are paying for those ads, the better you'll do.

Of course search engine optimization is a complicated and somewhat confusing topic in itself. My advice to a new eHow writer would be to write as many articles as you can in as little time as you can and then evaluate which ones are doing well.

And it takes a little while for articles to get indexed by the search engines and for readers to find them, so have some patience and don't lose faith!

I believe eHow earnings are exclusively from ad revenues, although I have no idea what percentage of ad revenues eHow gives the WCP participants.

My best advice is to research keywords and write on unique topics as much as possible.

Congrats on making your first goal last month!

It sounds like eHow is another place where you can learn the basics of SEO and getting visitors to your site (in this case articles!), since you can get results more quickly than when you start your own site and aren't yet seen as a long-time authority site by the search engines.
