In my last post, I laid out a system for finding the best rebates or rewards when shopping online. This post is a case study of sorts, showing you how I used this system to make a purchase from Barnes and Noble.
When I started my book search, I was on Amazon. I found a book I was interested in buying, and the Amazon prices was $24.99.
Knowing that there are no rebates or rewards for shopping at Amazon, I did a search for the same book at both Border’s and Amazon.com. The Border’s price was higher than Amazon’s, but the Barnes and Noble price was lower at $23.99.
I went to Evreward and entered Barnes and Noble in the search window. The results I got looked like this (click to make larger):
The results are cut off in the screenshot, but Mr. Rebates had the best reward with a 5% rebate. Notice also at the top of the results, under ‘Coupons, Coupon Codes and Discounts’ that there is a coupon code for 15% off of one item at Barnes and Noble.
I clicked through to the Mr. Rebates site right from this Evreward results window. I then clicked through to Barnes and Noble from the Mr. Rebates site. I placed my order for the book as I normally would, entering the coupon code in the checkout process. So I saved an additional 15% on my book AND I’ll be earning a 5% rebate, which will be deposited in my Mr. Rebates account.
The entire Evreward/Mr. Rebates process took me maybe an additional 30 seconds, since it was just a series of clicks. My savings on this one book purchase was $4.80 (15% coupon code + 5% Mr. Rebates reward). As a Family CEO, that’s a pretty good hourly rate.
