Three weeks ago I sold a little-used glass deviled egg dish for $74. And several years ago I financed almost our entire Christmas by selling a collectible Christmas village that I had grown tired of.
It's been thrilling to me to be able to raise cash - in some cases significant cash - by selling my used items on eBay.
Amy Dacyczyn said in her recent interview with Trent that the internet has been the best tactic for saving money that she's run across since she quite publishing The Tightwad Gazette. She even specifically mentioned using it to sell used stuff online.
I couldn't agree with her more.
In fact, my recent experiences have inspired me the following list of the top five reasons I love selling on eBay.
- I can list things a little at a time, on my own time. Even in my pajamas.
- Free Priority Mail boxes are available through the post office. I even have them delivered to my home for free.
- Tools like printing postage through PayPal and free USPS carrier pickup at my door make my job easy. I don't have a reason to even go to the post office any more!
- Once I got the eBay basics down, it became really easy to list things. The learning curve got shorter and shorter.
- As long as I'm selling my own possessions, and for less than I paid for them, my "income" isn't taxable.

Ebay is the best! lol And I just found that out as well that USPS will deliver priority boxes to my house with no charge. I think I will check my closets today and see if I have any potential Ebay treasures lol Thanks for the reminder.
Tara, the free box delivery is the best. Let me know what you list and if you have any success with it.
Thanks for these great tips. You've encouraged me to have another look for things I can sell.
Once my husband sold a set of playing cards and he got $1000! Isn't that crazy? Why anyone would pay that I don't know. They were somewhat collectable - but really...
Thanks again. I am excited about the Priority boxes, That is such a good idea. Do you have a postal scale or is it a flat rate for the box?
Have a great day,
Stacy
Stacy, the priority boxes come in both varities. There are several flat rate sizes (three I believe) and boxes that have no rate affiliated with them so you can weigh and send.
$1000 for a set of playing cards? That's crazy - and great for you guys! How fun.
