Making Extra Money with eBay and Other Online Selling Sites

Several years ago I listed some items on eBay in an effort to declutter my house and earn some extra money. I accomplished both and found that I actually enjoyed the process of researching prices and listing items for sale. Some of my successes were:

  • A little girls' wool dress coat sold for $76
  • A collection of 5 Peanuts holiday videos (VHS) sold for $41
  • I sold a ton of Southern Living kitchen and decorative items at great prices.
  • And, deciding that I'm not a collector type after all, I sold the pieces and accessories to my Department 56 Christmas Village. I don't have a total on that but I know that it went a long way toward funding our Christmas that year.
Fast forward several years and I find myself again looking around my house at some of the things that we’ve acquired and thinking that maybe it’s time to re-visit online selling. Last week I wrote about listing a glass deviled egg plate on eBay. (It's up to $51 at the time of this posting with a couple of days to go.) I also sold a cookbook and two text books on Amazon's Marketplace, resulting in an extra $124.

Some quick research tells me that I have a few more items that might be worth listing:
  • A Rich Dad Poor Dad "Cash Flow for Kids" board game. (Does very well on eBay).
  • Old Nintendo 64 games (Got these out to sell and my son, who now has both a Gamecube and a Wii, "re-discovered" Nintendo 64 and forbid me to sell them.)
  • A Sizzix die cutting machine with an alphabet and various other dies. (Will probably list on Craigslist since the weight would make it hard to ship.)
Selling items around your house for profit on eBay and other online venues is pretty easy and surprisingly fun. I'll keep you updated on my online selling results and, if you sell online, I'd love to hear about yours too. Please share!

I am doing this myself now. I have found eBay is a good way to get a little extra money when you need it. Not sure if you can "get rich" with it, but I wouldn't complain if I could. Good post.

I've done fairly well with 80's dolls and toys on eBay. You do need to be aware of the fees though. They can take a bite out of the profits.

And don't try books on eBay. I say this from personal experience. The fees are too high to sell most books. The occasional collectable first edition or antique book is a horse of a different color. That said, I love selling on Amazon.

Good luck on prying the Nintendo games away. I'd say give your son a month or so and then ask him which of the games he doesn't like anymore. You might be able to narrow the collection down somewhat that way.

That was my plan regarding the Nintendo, Gamer Girl.

Also, I've had some luck with books on eBay. Usually collector-types though.
