Occassionally I try to read through my utility-type bills but get frustrated by the mumbo jumbo. For instance, here is a list of taxes and charges added to my local telephone service:- End User Common Line
- FED USF Surcharge
- Federal Excise Tax
- State USF Surcharge
- Local 911 Tax (finally one I understand)
- Local Number Portability Charge
- Regulatory Surcharge
- Special Municipal Charge
- State and Local Tax
Grand total: $12.87 and I still don't know what all that stuff is for.
I did take a look at my cell phone bill the other day, however, and discovered that each directory service call (which I swear used to be free on my plan) is $1.40. Gulp. This month's bill had $4.20 added to it for three of these calls, which is probably about par for the course for me in a given month.
I guess from now on I'll be using my minutes to call home and hoping someone is there to look up a number for me! Can you hear me now?

Better yet, dial 1-800-FREE411. It's free information. You have to listen to a really short "this listing is sponsored by..." ad but it's worth it. Unfortunately they don't connect you to the number so you need to be able to write the number down (or have a really good memory).
I use 1-800-free411 all of the time and about half of the time I don't have to listen to the sponsor message...not that I mind--the minute I waste on my cell phone is nothing compared to the $1+ charge for their 411 service. I have been very happy with the free411 service. jm2c
I tried the 1-800-free411 and the guy on the other end told me that there was no listing for the local post office in our area...what good did it do to call them?
I keep an old phonebook in my car...i started when someone rear ended me and ran off and I didn't have the number for the local police department.
