This recording of a customer trying to cancel his AOL account has been flying around the internet of late. It even made its way onto the Today show. The result was the firing of the AOL customer service rep on the tape.
A google search about cancelling AOL also turned up this result where AOL was fined $1.25 million by the state of New York and agreed to reform its customer service procedures.
Back in April I blogged about how I caved to AOL when I tried to call and cancel. The customer service agent kept cutting my rate until he got to $4.95/month and I agreed to keep the service. Several weeks later, however, I used the fax option to cancel my account so I could bypass speaking to an agent.
What’s interesting is that in the letter I got confirming my cancellation, AOL let me know that I could keep my AOL email account by accessing it through AOL.com for free. I can also access many other AOL features that way.

That’s a good tip. Sure it would be great if they could get you to pay them for their service, but they still make money off your eyeballs if you log in to check your AOHELL email.
Make those advertisers pay!
AOL…the wost internet experience I have had yet to date. I always loved their “child friendly” internet. Which meant an adult who wanted family friendly surfing for everyone had to have a child’s home page?
